No matter your personal style -- city minimalist, boho chic, vintage classic, athleisure hip, modern preppy, or you-name-it – there is something delicious about putting on a simple, pinafore-style dress. When something rests lightly on your shoulders and falls smoothly past your body parts, you feel a little weightless and a little lyrical.

The Hinterland Dress pattern from Sew Liberated fills the bill for a simple structure with many possibilities of mood and intention. My daughter, Kirstin, was the first to request one in summer linen. My fashion sidekick, Alice helped me find her a crisp shot linen: yellow thread on the weft, blue on the warp to make a delicious subtle green/blue.
One Hinterland led to another, and Kirstin requested a cool linen viscose noil with a soft drape. To increase the romance, I made underskirts. One was a small green/gold check and the other a creamy white linen with a deep eyelet hem.

It was time for Alice to get a Hinterland of her own. As time was slipping from summer to autumn, she chose the linen viscose noil in a complex mossy green. We raised the front hem of the dress in a low arc to reveal a cinnamon underskirt. A dancer and someone with deep visual curiosity, Alice knows how to wear things.

It gives me no end of pleasure to sew for other people. These two – my daughter and my friend – are patient good sports, choosing fabrics on-line and enduring fittings via UPS and in the lobby of the local Y.
They bring imagination and style to the things that come out of my sewing space.

What’s not to love?
Lovely. Utterly the opposite of buying a dress off the rack made to someone else's imagination.
